Listen, Challenge, Change

Did you know we have internal dialogue going on all the time? Our internal messaging system, much of which is in the subconscious mind, governs our beliefs about who  and how we are and what we believe we can do. Most the time, we aren't even aware of it. However, when trying to change a particular behavior to reach a goal, you must tune in  and identify any thoughts or beliefs that are not aligned with your goals or vision of how you want to be. How do you tune into your internal dialouge? One of the ways you can become aware of what  your're saying to yourself is to keep a journal. With my clients,  I provide a template for recording eating behaviors,  and the thoughts, feelings and situations related to the eating behaviors. Its called kj's Eating Behavior Journal and my most successful clients use it religiously and completely. Not only do they record the information, they also use the form as a daily self-assessment tool. Once you become aware of your counter-productive thoughts, you can challenge them and begin to change them. Here is an example, one of my clients was having trouble motivating herself to keep her goal of walking for 30 minutes three times per week. This was part of her plan to achieve her vision of being a healthy and fit by the time she turned 40. After some tuning in to her inner critic this is what she heard herself saying. "I really don't feel like walking today, its cold out, ...oh what's the use, I never stick to an exercise plan anyway, I may as well give up." Does this sound familiar? If you listen, you can challenge your thoughts and beliefs. Then you can turn around what you are saying to yourself. In this case, you might give yourself permission to do just part of what you originally comittied to for example, "I am putting on my walking shoes and I will at least go to the end of the street. If I don't feel like continuing, OK, but at least I am getting myself prepared and on track." Chances are by the time you get to the end of the street, you may find yourself saying "its not so bad, I can do this I can keep going."

Many of my clients have used this technique of taking smaller steps to garner the confidence in knowing they can succeed. It's ok to give yourself permission to do this. The main thing is to try to do something evey day that moves you toward your goal. AND then reward yourself for doing so.

Believe in Yourself and Achieve Weight Loss Success

Beliefs are the commanders of our mind; they influence our feelings and actions. We are what we believe we are and we do what we believe we can do. So, if you beieve you you can, you will. If you believe you can't, then you won't. In other words, if we believe something is true we literally go in the state of its being true. Beliefs are the most powerful forces for creating the state of our selves.

If you read my earlier blog "Mind Your Way to Successful Weight Management" , then you know I believe the the power of positive thinking in achieving your goals. However, you can not just wish or desire to be healthy and fit and have it just happen. You must to create your vision of yourself and see in your mind's eye yourself as healthy and fit. BUT, you still need to take it to the next level. You have to Believe You Can and Believe You Will achieve your vison of yourself as healthy and fit. This takes awareness of your thoughts feelings and actions. It takes self-assessment and it takes a consious effort to change your beliefs about yourself and your ability to change thoughts and behavior patterns. You can do this by identifying negative, unproductive thoughts and changing them to positive, productive thougths and repeating and practicing them over and over again. This takes commitment and practice. The investment is worth a life time of the joy of living in your vision of being healthy and fit.

In My Transform Your Mind ... Transform Your Body Eating Behavior Change Workshops, I give you the tools to transform your desire to achieve your weight, health and fitness goals into reality. This is a step by step process to:

  • create your vision from your desire
  • build awaress of your thoughts feelings and actions
  • transform your internal thinking to achieve a can-do attitude
  • align your thoughts feelings and actions with your vision
  • build your confidence and solidify your beliefs in yourself, your ability to identify and overcome obstacles and achieve long term success

"The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is alerting consumers nationwide not to purchase or consume more than 25 different products marketed for weight loss because they contain undeclared, active pharmaceutical ingredients that may put consumers’ health at risk".
Here's the link to the article that appeared in Nutraceuticals World today:

There are no magic bullets for weight loss. Ask your health care provider before choosing a dietary supplement or go to www.nsf.org for a list of certified products. These products have been tested and their manufacturing facilities inspected.
